Tectorum Air Plant
Tillandsia tectorums are quite a unique rare air plant because of their fuzzy and lovable, snowball like appearance. The little white "fuzzies" all over the plant are called trichomes, which is what they use to absorb moisture and nutrients from the air. They prefer hot, sunny and dry situations but they will grow fine in a bright room. The leaves change color dramatically to bright green when watered, and slowly change back to minty white as they dry. A slow growing and rare species, the Tillandsia Tectorum produces beautiful bright purple flowers upon maturity. Perfect as a dramatic addition to a terrarium, or simply set in a glass bowl.
Tillandsia Tectorum likes to be misted lightly daily in a drier climate if there isn't sufficient dew in the morning or a mid level of humidity. It needs to dry rather quickly so a light to medium mist is sufficient. It does not do well in high heat with heavy humidity since it needs to dry sufficiently. Make sure it gets lots of air circulation if outdoors in humid conditions. Do not soak these plants like we recommend with our other tillandsia, instead spray mist them with water.
It is native to Peru and Ecuador.
